HUMAN PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS INDOCTRINATION FOR AIRCREW TRAINEES



Introduction

This course is designed to provide pilot and non-pilot aircrew trainees a strong foundation in Aviation Physiology and Cognitive Human Factors. Students enrolled in flying schools, flying clubs and pilots who have never had indoctrination in this field would find the contents enriching and relevant.



Objectives

At the end of this course, the participant is expected to acquire:

  1. A clear appreciation of the physiological hazards associated with the unnatural and hostile flight environment, how to recognize them and fly safely nevertheless;
  2. An understanding of the various cognitive human factors issues related to perception, attention, decision making and understand why loss of situation awareness and human error occurs in aviation and how to prevent them from compromising flight safety;
  3. Working knowledge of fitness to fly aspects including dealing with common health problems and managing self-imposed stresses.


Duration

The duration of the course is 5 days.



Course Content

  1. Aviation Physiology: Pressure, Orientation, Acceleration
  2. Cognitive Human Factors: Human Information Processing, Perception, Attention, Decision Making, Crew Resources Management; Situation Awareness; Human Error in Aviation; Human Factors models; Case Studies;
  3. Self-imposed Stress: Nutrition, Alcohol, Smoking, Fatigue, Work Stress
  4. Occupational Health : Noise, Radiation, Heat, Vibration, Toxicology
  5. Fitness to Fly: Incapacitation, Managing common health problems
